For all those who have anything to do with children

Please read Joel's blog and watch the video. It is a powerful witness as to why children should rear-face in the car to the limit of the biggest convertible car seat.

http://www.joelsjourney.org/index.html

I know I'm an absolute weirdo for rear-facing my 22 month old and my 4 year old. I even plan to add a third rear-facing baby to our vehicle. I would rather have my kids alive and well than to forward face them for "convenience's sake"

Happy Birthday Karen!

She is 4 years old today! It is hard to believe with such a small child! We celebrated last night with a pink Barbie cake that I went to great lengths to make. She didn't eat a bite, so she opened presents while everyone else ate cake. She and the rest of the kids love her gifts of a plastic tea party set and a baking cupcakes set. They played hot chocolate and cupcake party last night and this morning. Now, if I can find the camera cord that was "put down somewhere" I might get some pictures up. That is- if I can stay on the internet long enough.

Update

It has been a long time. I thought I better make an update. So, lets see. We had fun at Halloween. We're having computer issues, so can't plug in the camera. I have halloween pictures, but that will have to wait. Emily dressed as Princess Peach (or Toadstool), Caitlyn- a cat, Eric- Captain Kurk (even bought him a phaser), Karen a Pegasus (last year's costume), and Benjamin a duck. All the good candy is gone.

The kids took two sessions of swimming lessons. Emily made it to level 3 and Caitlyn to 4. Now we have 4 kids in 4 different levels. I signed them up for January.

The cat had an abscess+- due to the cats who attack her. The vet fixed her up and now I am supposed to give her medicine and ointment twice a day. It is very challenging to give a cat suspension meds. I am perplexed as to why it is pink and flavored bubble gum. The cat has been indoors, although now she is supposed to go out for the day. Wednesday night we leave and the cat will have to be left out all the time with no medicine. I hope she'll be okay. The neighbor will feed her as usual.

Blackout

Sunday morning at 1:30am the power went out. I know because Aaron was still up! I was woken up from my slumber by crying and it took me some time to figure that out and get up. I found Karen on the floor in the pitch darkness. After I dealt with her Aaron showed up. (Why couldn't he come to her since he was still up?) I think he was turning off the computers... So, on Sunday morning there was still no power. It was very cloudy, so also very dark in the house. The kids were slow to rouse. Aaron used the lack of power as an excuse to stay in bed. Then he got up and refused to shower by candlelight as I did. He also told the kids they didn't need to hurry and eat or dress. The power came on at 10 to 9am. I hurried the kids and left Aaron in the shower. We got to church 10 minutes late. He made it in time for Sacrament meeting! He had to shave and iron his shirt. It takes 45 minutes to iron his shirts... So, hopefully he has learned to prepare and to have faith! Probably not.

I should probably mention it is my birthday today. Aaron gave me a card that said "Let's eat out." I hadn't made dinner, so that sounded good. But he told the waitress that it was my birthday. Just as I thought we were preparing to leave I got a sombrero on my head!!! I've got to get him on his next birthday. I feel old to have hit the big 3 0. My grandma and parents gave me twice the usual birthday gift and we are not in dire need of money this year. So, now I get to have fun thinking of 100 ways to spend money on myself. Still, I keep thinking about car seats...

PLEASE, stay rear-facing past 12mos/20lbs

***This is someone else's story. I have permission to copy it. If you want to see the pictures, you'll have to sign up with that site.***

PLEASE, for your children's sake, consider leaving them in REAR-FACING (RF) car seats as longs as you can. Although it is "suggested" by many people and organizations, that you can turn them forward facing at 1 yr / 20 lbs, and seats are made to accommodate that, it doesn't mean they will not be subjected to cervical spine injuries in an accident. Sure, it'll hold their body in place, as it did for my grandson. But their head is thrown violently forward!! Actually, if you do your homework, front facing children are "75% more likely to be injured" in a crash ( http://www.carseatsite.com/rf.htm ).

I am Grandpa, and here's my personal view. My 18 mo old grandson, Joel, was injured in a front impact car crash 4 weeks ago. He is a "beefy" boy, weighing in at 34lbs and about 39" tall. According to his mom, the doctor told her it was "okay" to put him in a front facing car seat, because he was a "big boy". So she did. And he was securely strapped in the rear seat. The car hit a tree, for reasons unknown, at city speed limit of approx 35 mph.

At the accident scene, the EMT crew took Joel out of the car while in the car seat and all, and transported him to the hospital. They had to "bag" him at the scene to restart his breathing. The true miracle is that the ambulance was driving by, and some people flagged it down. They didn't even get time to call 911. You can bet God had his hand in that!!! they were on the scene in about 60 seconds!!

Below are some photos of Joel, before and after. YOU decide whats best for your child.......not anyone else!!! He sustained dislocated top 2 vertebrae in his spine (C-1 & C-2). Some of the doctors put it in very simple terms...his skull, internally, became detached from his body... and was basically held on with his skin.

In the last few weeks, I've scoured the internet to find these facts:
* a young child's head is approx 25% of his/her bodyweight. If that were true of adults, my head (I'm 220lbs) would weigh 55lbs! as it is, an adults head is only about 6% of their body weight. So, kids are very top-heavy.
* Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland recommend rear facing until 4 yrs old
* look on You Tube at the crash test videos of front facing vs. rear facing. you'll be amazed.
YouTube - Crash Test - http://babyproducts.about.com/od/car...ear_facing.htm

* if a young child's spine is "stretched" a 1/4 of an inch, it could result in total paralysis or death.
* and this is amazing! There was an article published in Pediatrics (the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics) earlier this year that states: ""A recent analysis of the protection provided in rear-facing compared with forward-facing car safety seats has revealed that children under the age of 2 years are 75% less likely to die or sustain serious injury when they are in a rear-facing seat.2 This finding was true regardless of direction of the crash, even those crashes with side impact, which typically are the most severe."

"Parents may be helped to understand the importance of using the convertible car safety seat in the rear-facing position longer than 1 year if they are counseled that children are 5 times safer than when riding in a forward-facing seat into the second year of life."

After hearing about that, I contacted the AAP via email, and asked what their position is on this issue. Their response was "While this was published in the Academy's journal, it does not necessarily constitute AAP policy" and "Because riding rear-facing does provide significantly more protection to children's heads, necks, and spines, the Academy does recommend it for as long as possible, but the only minimum we have set is 12 months/20 pounds. This policy statement is under revision but is current at this time."

The policy statement is under revision.... at this time??

Do you're home work folks!!! Oh, and you'll also find out that in the USA, rear facing seats only go up to about 35lbs. In Europe, whose testing standards seem to exceed US standards (http://daddytypes.com/2007/01/05/con...e_car_seat.php ), the RF car seats can be purchased up to 55 lbs. AND, made by the same manufacturers as in the US.

So, the question is, why can't we get them?? And don;t worry about legroom. check out these larger RF seats: http://forum.nybaktmamma.com/showthread.php?t=524428
Sure, they can break a leg in a violent crash, but I think bones are easier to fix than a broken neck!!! Heck, it's better to mount a portable CD player in the back window shelf and let them watch it, then to risk their life! Think about it....their body is strapped down to a car seat that is strapped down, and the car comes to an abrupt stop!! where is their head going to go? FORWARD, and at a tremendous velocity!! The back of their neck/ spinal cord is vulnerable to injury.

But the BIG question is....... for you to decide. I know you want to see their darling faces. But you don't want to see them in a halo.

I know this is a very long blog, but if it saves one child...or one family, the agony of what we've endured these last 4 weeks, it is worth the read!! The pic's below are about six weeks apart. he was eating cake by himself....very cute.

And now, he is is headed for intense physical therapy. he does move his fingers and his legs, but he doesn't pick up his arms. The therapy people are very optimistic, given the movement in his extremities. Doctors believe it was some compression of the shoulder nerves from the car seat straps acroos his collar bone area. You had to see those big, wide bruise marks. Again...front facing will do it.!!

If you want to see photos of Joel, before and after, visit: http://forum.carseatdata.org/convertible-seats/1827-rear-facing-is-best-true-story.html

I welcome all comments, as I would like to see: the FF threshold raised to 24 months, and largers RF seats available in the US. Thank you

More car seat pictures

I wanted to see what the girls looked like in their boosters. I am seriously considering new ones. Maybe just the cheap fisher price ones because I could offset the cost easily by selling the turboboosters.

Because I'm obsessed

I really haven't got anything to blog about. Here's some pictures.

So, to know the full story... I had different harnessed seats in the car, but I came across a problem because I wanted Karen to be able to use the rear-facing seat when Benjamin is not in the car. The kids, however had to have the harness straps in different slots in the seat that was in there. (The Avenue) The two seats that they can use the same strap positions are the tribute and the scenera. I used to have the scenera as the rear-facing seat, but Karen begged for her pink seat back. I thought to call Dorel to see if I could buy a pink cover for the Avenue, but they are not yet selling replacement covers. So, I put the tribute rear-facing, but the avenue wouldn't fit forward facing. Then I tried the titan and that wouldn't fit. So, I brought over the dirty, not yet expired cargo and it fit- barely though, so I switched it to the outside and it fit great. So, I took it in and cleaned it up. That setup is 46 inches across! The cargo expires in December. Also, the tribute only goes to 30 pounds rear-facing and Karen is 28 pounds. I hope that in two months either Benjamin grows in his torso or I can buy a pink cover for the Avenue. Or Karen may just lose her pink seat again.

Here's Eric in the Titan.

The big news of the day is that the National Highway Safety something or other released the results of its booster study from 2007. It listed 13 booster seats as "not recommended" as well as several that were "best bets" and "good bets". All their testing amounted to was sitting a 6 year old sized dummy in the seat in a vehicle and determining whether the belt fit well, good, or bad. There was no crash testing, so they did not even consider side impact protection. Most of the "best bets" are backless boosters. The new Recaro Vivo, Britax Frontier, Graco Nautilus, and Sunshine Kids' Monterey were not yet out and therefore not tested. Our fisher price booster (the one in the picture) rated as a "best bet". I think it is because it has an infinite headrest/belt guide adjuster. That seat has been discontinued and costs only $30. I wonder if everyone will buy them now! Also, the Britax Parkway tested in that category and is also discontinued. I was considering getting one sometime.

Update

It has been a long time. I was hoping for pictures. We went out and traded Eric's Radian 80 car seat for a brand new Graco Nautilus. He loves it, but it is big. Emily and I took out the 3 seater bench and put the 2-seater back in. Now everyone is comfy.

On Saturday we went out to look at vehicles. First we tried out a 2004 Chevy Astro. I was sorely dissapointed in it. There are two positions with lap-only belts and no head rests. There are no tether anchors for those positions, so they could only be used for rear-facing car seats. Also it was a pain and a struggle to get the 3 car seats installed. There are only 2 sets of latch in outer positions and that was a painful struggle too.

Next, we tried out the Sienna. It didn't take long before we were in love. All size rear positions have locking shoulder belts, headrests, and tether anchors. Five positions have latch. The very back windows slide down. There are air vents in the way back. They also have cupholders in the back too. The trunk is depressed, so it can actually hold a lot more than it looks. Also, the added safety, great drive, and such were great too. So, we have to be patient, save out money, and then we will buy a Sienna. I'm really excited. I have never liked our Aerostar. It is a big old pain, but I am grateful for it because it allowed us to actually be able to save up money to buy a fancy Sienna.

Emily and Benjamin dance!

Thursday, September 4, 2008

My wild boy

This morning during the Sunbeam Song, Benjamin was jumping around the room. He got up on a chair, jumped , and hit his head on a shelf. Later, during scripture reading he got on the recliner. In front of the recliner was a laundry hamper. I looked over and decided he wouldn't do it. A minute later I looked up from my reading and found him head down in the hamper. Then Aaron went over the gate into the kitchen for breakfast (He went to work late due to being up half the night.) and Benjamin climbed up the gate. He is amazing. He's also figured out how to stand on chairs to get to crackers. Yesterday when Emily practiced dance, he practiced dance too. He is very cute, but very wild and crazy. I hope he calms down soon.

I went out to the valley to pick up Caitlyn's found camera from Girl Scout camp. Then went over to Sears to see about getting a car seat for a kid in town who is 2 and has outgrown his carseat by weight. I got the lowest price car seat that harnesses to 50 pounds. Eric barely fit in it, so I'm hoping the boy can fit till he's 4 years old. Now my worry is how to get mom to accept the seat. Maybe I should offer it on freecycle.

I won!

I learned about a book called "Socrates and The Three Little Pigs" at a homeschool meeting. A lady said she bought it for $63 because it was the lowest price she could find. That intrigued me. I searched and found it for $40. (Search for Anno's Three Little Pigs" and leave out the Socrates part.) Even better, though. I found it on ebay. I won too! My winning bid was $8.50 with $4 shipping. Aaron thinks we should buy up the $40 ones and then sell for $100. I think I'll just tell the other homeschoolers about them. I can't wait to get this hard to find math book.

The kids have grown!

I put them on the scale today. Emily is 54 pounds, Caitlyn 52, Eric 42, Karen 29, and Ben 23. (Ben has been to the doctor 4 times in the past month.) I am so surprised that the girls are now over 50 pounds! Karen now gets to forward face in the old evenflo car seats. (30 pound rear-facing limit)

We got the fisher price booster yesterday and I am a bit dissapointed in it- or at least what I've read about it. It is really 14 inches wide- only 2 less than the graco boosters we have. Also, Eric is the only one who can use it at its thinnest.

So, what I have decided to do to the car seats (for now) is this:
Give Eric a booster in the van pending good sitting. Put the radian in the car for the older 3 to share. (They can sit in the middle and there will be no buckling issues.) Also in the car is the rear-facing tribute for Ben and the forward facing titan for Karen. In the van we have the new avenue for Ben and Karen's pink scenera. I'm sure this is all gobbelty-gook for most, but oh well. Here's Eric in his new booster.

Photobucket

Last Thursday Emily danced for the senior home. She was graceful and is a natural dancer.

Photobucket

On Friday we met mom's friend and went out to Cottonwood canyon. We had a lovely time. The kids got to go out on a canoe for the first time in their lives.

Photobucket

We walked around the lake and guess who decided to be the "trail boss"?

Saturday we went to Lagoon. It was crazy with a million people, but also fun.

One down, one more to go

We went to kmart today to check out their car seats at 10 percent off. I had a coupon too. I had little miss 27 pound 3.5 year old sit in the car seats. In the evenflo tribute she had 2 inches above her head, cosco scenera 4 inches, and the safety first avenue 5 inches. I bought the avenue. The seat is the tallest, has the highest straps (16 inches) and it has an 8 year lifespan. I think the seat may be my last harness purchase! (Yah, maybe not when the other spare expires.) The seat will be Karen's spare in the car until Ben is nearly 30 pounds and then it will be his main seat. I bought the silver instead of girly pink. I installed it after the kids went to bed, so I have to wait till tomorrow to get kids in the seat pictures.

Photobucket

Isn't it nice? It was a pain in the patootie to install. I need a pool noodle. Oh and there are 15 inches left on the other side of the car. The booster seat should fit nicely. I am so excited! It is on its way.

Emily lost another tooth today. This time Aaron had to save it from the basement sink drain. Apparently she was trying to pull it out. I must remember to get the tooth fairy to come.

Caitlyn's Party

Today was the big day. Two seven year old girls came over to play in the pool and have cake. It was fun. (Our three girls were here too, so it was plenty of kids for me.) Caitlyn helped make her "cake" It is actually ice cream molded to look like cake with whipped cream on top.

Photobucket

Photobucket

One girl sewed Caitlyn a quilt. (Her mom helped.)

Photobucket

It is so refreshing to not get junk at a birthday party. I tried not to give junk as favors. I did give out most of last year's Halloween candy. (The hard candy that doesn't go bad with age.) The kids played a game picking up glass rocks in the pool. They kept them. Then we found some pink jump ropes with wooden handles on clearance. My kids think the jump ropes are the best. I'm going to take back the spares and get something boyish for Eric.

I sold the booster seat today! Then I bought the Fisher price one. The kids had a hard time deciding between silver and tan. They ended up with silver.

Here's a pic of Karen and her piggy tails.

Wheeling and Dealing

I've had some stuff up for sale for a while. Thing are finally coming together and it looks like I might be selling several things. I started this because I wanted to get Eric the Nautilus car seat, but I've decided against it now. I think I'll let him use a booster when he's 6. Maybe. He's already 5.5 years old. He's really okay with his car seat anyway. He just loves new things. So, my latest idea is to sell the spare booster seat. Then I'm going to get the Fisher-Price Safe Voyage Booster. It has an adjustable seat from 10-12.5 inches. The turboboosters we have are 16 inches wide. The FP booster will give room for my beloved 3 across in the tempo. Aaron always complains when I do that with a booster because the kids can't buckle. The booster only costs $30, so no big deal with all the money I have and will be making. Maybe I can sell more stuff and get another one.

Emily has been wheeling and dealing at dance. Her tap shoes were too small, so she traded her teacher for bigger ones. Then her ballet shoe go a hole in it from too much wear. (She loves her ballet shoes.) She took Caitlyn's ballet shoes to trade for a good pair. I have let it out that Caitlyn won't be doing dance this year. Viola lessons are twice the cost of dance. Perhaps when she gets into orchestra she can go to no lessons and do dance again.

Benjamin had his well check yesterday. He weighs 23 pounds and is 32 inches long. He has two more inches to grow before he can forward face in the car! (Not going to happen till hes 3.5 or 4, though.) He's still not talking which isn't a concern due to our family history and his visual impairment. I'm starting signing with him. I don't expect anything though.

Karen has curly hair!!! I am so surprised. She inherited Aaron's hair. Or at least his wavyness. She's going to look like her grandma. I always thought she had straight hair like me. It is so interesting how different all the kids are!

A Miracle

I've been reading "The Work and the Glory" books lately. (After watching the very bad movies.) What has really struck me is how much faith the early saints had. They witnessed many miracles. That made me question my faith and I have determined to be better. This past week I had that horrid illness. It was really quite awful and I lost over 10 pounds in just a few days. Last night when I went to bed I had my telltale burp attacks. I thought it was just some leftover from my illness and having my stomach ache since afternoon, so I just went to bed. At 3am things had progressed and it was a stress attack. I prayed and pleaded, then jumped, then felt it would be okay and went to bed. I woke up healthy and fine! I know it was Heavenly Father who healed me of my problem.

I have been reading other things too. Michael Ballam emailed some of his talks to me. I read the first one and learned that music can give order to the brain. It also creates a bridge between the left and right sides of the brain. I want my kids to have music in their lives. The other bit I've been reading is DeMille's packet on Love of Learning I think. I read about educational theories and such. I as mentor to my children need to be in scholar phase and study myself. There is a point where he says that I should teach the kids what is mine. What is mine is different than anybody else. I have stewardship over my children. I can teach what is right for my family at that time. That is so freeing! Science is not mine (yet) and neither is ancient history. Right now what is mine is to learn cursive (better), Greek, to play the organ, and to become better acquainted with the scriptures. Since I'll keep on studying I can go through other studies. Someday math may be mine. (If not, I'll tell Aaron he needs to be mentor for a while.) It is so nice to know that I don't have to subscribe to the public school subjects. My kids will be okay.

I started punishing the children with chores. My house is cleaner already. It is so much better to have the kids do something constructive to make up for their folly rather than just sitting in the corner. Those whose folly is to make a mess get to clean it up and do yet another chore. It is awesome!

Homeschool meeting

I learned a lot tonight. I also had a lot of fun. I just love our homeschooling support group meetings. So, I need to talk to Emily about the "No" answer. Then before I say "No" to her I prep her and talk about how I'm going to say "no" and she has various choices that will lead to consequences, etc. Then say "No". I love it!!! It will prepare her for disappointment. I've also learned about consequences for misbehavior. I'm going to sit the kids down and have a nice chat. We're revamping discipline around here.

Here's a cute picture for the day.

Recovering

I'm all better today. I just need to get myself hydrated and nourished. I still have dizziness issues. I cancelled piano lessons so that I could have time to clean house.

During Sacrament meeting Sunday, Emily handed me her tooth! Wonder what she was doing... Fortunately, all three girls slept in Monday morning so the tooth fairy managed to remember to come.

Gastroenteritis

Is just awful. I am so dehydrated. My stomach has been hurting bad since this morning. I'm a frequent visitor to the bathroom. This better be the last of it. Aaron has just begun to get it. Stay away from the Curry home.

Middle of the night

So, now I am up in the middle of the night with a stomach pain. It has lessened much from when I went to bed, but still present. Yesterday was the sick day. I hope I recover soon. This illness comes with stomach cramps.

Our happy news is that the swamp cooler was fixed with a replacement belt. I never knew a swamp cooler was supposed to be quiet! Sunday we got a thunder storm with showers. It was great. The weather cooled for the first time in months.

My complaints of the day

1. Ben's infection isn't any better.
2. Karen threw up a bunch last night and I didn't know it until morning. (She slept on the basement couch.)
3. The forecast is 100 degrees.
4. The swamp cooler is broken.
5. We have to go to Grantsville for viola lessons and go to the park during.
6. I'm on meds that make me dizzier than usual.

Why does it all have to happen in one day?

Getting old or too many kids

In the past year I have been to the doctor more times than I have in the 10 years prior. (Not counting pregnancy stuff.) This time I have a UTI. Not fun. Ben has his third staph infection since April. I asked my doctor for advice. He told me to wash him from head to toe with antibacterial soap, stuff neosporin up his nose, and scrub his nails with a toothbrush with neosporin on it. Then clean his toys. I'll do that and boil his diapers again.

Happy pioneer day! The children's parade is this evening. Caitlyn is already dressed up in her pioneer dress and bonnet. (I had to get the DUP lady to go down to the museum so I could buy it.) Eric and Emily are planning to ride their bikes. I'm supposed to make Caitlyn's helmet boyish. Eric's is lost and they must have a helmet to ride in the parade.

The left-out scooter

I measured my seat and the nautilus. It should fit 3 in a row in the van. (I am not moving the radian from its perfect position.) Now if I can only get the money... New car seats are so exciting!

Emily and Eric traded scooters. (I think) Emily left Eric's scooter (the one that was originally his) at the corner (2 1/5 houses down) for a day or maybe more since she can't remember riding it yesterday. I didn't hear of this till we were pulling into the driveway this afternoon. I sent Emily out to see if it hadn't been stolen. It has. Eric claims he never wants to ride a scooter again now that he has a bike. I have issues with losing stuff. It is losing money to me. My parents bought it though. It was Eric's Christmas gift. Emily is not allowed to ride her scooter(or the one that used to be hers) for a week and after that has to ask Eric's permission to ride it because it is now his even though he doesn't want it. He may change his mind when the bike becomes old or broken.

A piano student didn't show up today. I wonder what happened. It does bother me when I sit around expecting someone and they don't show.

I got a babysitter and went to the dentist. No cavities. Yay!!!

I got an email today about a homeschooling meeting on classical math teaching. I was all set to go when Aaron called to say there are major problems going on with the distribution center. He won't be home in time and I haven't the time to arrange a babysitter. Maybe next month.

False alarm

Not pregnant. That is a relief and yet bothers me because I thought it was perfect timing.

Yesterday I took the three little ones to walmart to get Ben's medication for his infected finger. We had to wait, so we went to the car seat section. They finally got the Nautilus on display. (I have emailed them twice and talked to an employee.) I sat Eric in the seat and he loved it- even with the harness. It looks similar to the Turbobooster and has a cup holder and a cubby in the other arm rest. His radian doesn't have that stuff and it also does not covert to a booster seat. It is very much a car seat. So, now I'm trying to figure out how to come up with the money to buy a Nautilus to make Eric happy with his car seat. I'm also going to make him earn it by keeping his jammies dry. Or maybe by telling the truth. Of course, I still have to get the money somehow.

The latest car seat craziness

This is the new car seat I want.

http://www.multimac.co.uk/multimac.html

Photobucket

I can turn my 3 seater bench into a four seater. The harness is built to fit 80 pound 12 year olds. My kids will be 12 year old sized somewhere around age 14. It is supposed to be out in the US by the end of the year. I totally want one. My 8 passenger van could be a 10 passenger. I could have my big kids harnessed too. (They have headrests, just not in the picture.)

Driving myself crazy

I am searching for the perfect family vehicle. So far, haven't come up with one. I want a 10 seater small van. As in smaller than a full sized van, but a little larger than a minivan. Minivans are too small and I hope to not need a 12 passenger van. Actually a 12 passenger van would be okay if any of them had headrests on the bench seats. I am so frustrated that there are only two options of big vans: the ford/chevy/gmc (all the same) and the sprinter which is gigantic. I'd go with the ford one if they could throw in some headrests. I'm looking at minivans that seat (or can seat) 8. So far I've ousted the odyssey (again) for lack of space. The sienna is still in the running. Now I've added the ford freestar. Our aerostar is looking better the more I search for something else. It would be frugal.

In other news, Caitlyn started viola lessons today. She did well. The viola is of high quality. (Bought used for $175.) There is a park nearby where the kids had a lot of fun. They are excited for more viola lessons.

Stressing over activities again

I wish I could sign the kids up for everything they were interested in, but I just don't have the money! We bought Caitlyn a viola. I signed her up with the only viola teacher in the county. She only charges a little more than I do per lesson, but since she lives in the city she also charges a monthly gas fee which tacks on even more cost. Caitlyn can't take dance too. My plan was to do viola lessons for a year, then join school orchestra with no lesson and do dance another year. Dh says school orchestra is not enough. I took lessons during my school years. He didn't until his later high school years. He would know and Caitlyn has inherited his musical abilities. We'll get to that next summer though. Emily is really upset and mad that I did not buy her a violin. I had considered it, but the violin currently for sale appears to be rather cheap. Really, the deciding factor was Emily's lack of devotion to music and her frustration that results in throwing things. I thought she'd be happy with dance, but she really wants to play violin. I wish these girls didn't have to try to be the same when they most certainly are not. I've made a deal with Emily. She gets a sticker on the chart for every day she practices music (piano, viola, recorder, whatever) and an x over it if she throws something. If she does make it, she won't get to do dance either. Violin teachers are expensive too. I wish piano teachers weren't so numerous. We're a dime a dozen. At least Aaron's got a clarinet student too. I have pictures I will upload some day. We will be going on a little vacation Thursday through Saturday. I wish we could stay home for Tooele's Independence day celebration. Logan area doesn't seem to have much and the parade is at noon. It is too hot that time of day.

Yesterday I took Ben to the eye doctor. He has prescribed glasses to protect his one good eye. After much discussion with the vision teacher we've decided to start with sunglasses.

A complaint for the day

We were going to go out to Orem to check out a viola. Then we were going out to Provo canyon for a picnic lunch. We had packed up the car when I realized I didn't have the van key. I called Aaron and he had both, so there is no moving the van today. I rescheduled the viola visit for tomorrow, but we might go in the afternoon before heading up to the bell choir get together. Then we won't get in our picnic. Since we had to walk anywhere we went today, we headed off to the park. Eric fell down on some cracked pavement which made me notice that is back bike wheel is flat. I had him go home for a scooter. He couldn't use his scooter- only Emily's which has a messed up clamp so that it can't adjust for him. He whined and cried about that, so we all went home. I think we'll watch a movie after lunch, go swimming in our backyard pools, and then go to the park after dinner. (It is already too hot for the park now.)

Our weather forecast is dreary, Sunny, hazy, and hot. I want thunderstorms at least! It is so horribly dry and icky out here.

Playing with car seats again

I thought I had gotten the perfect setup of car seats in the van. The one hitch was that I couldn't get Eric's seat in tight enough. I ended up with his seat in a center position because the middle belt works with his seat. I also got it tethered under Ben's seat, so it won't get in anyone's way.

Photobucket

I hope to keep it all that way for a while. But then tonight I thought I should switch Karen's and Caitlyn's seats so that Emily could sit on the other side and I don't know.... The problem is that Karen's seat sticks out over the bench and a booster seat can't sit there. Previously I had the rear-facing seats lined up in the middle. I liked that, but Eric's seat is finicky.

Tomorrow we are going to Provo area to check out a viola and violin. Caitlyn has set her heart on playing viola and Emily on violin. I was just going to get one for Caitlyn and the violin is cheaper, but she won't go for the violin. I am not exactly sure about getting an instrument for Emily too. She doesn't like to practice and tends to throw things in frustration. I'm thinking. I've been trying to research violins and violas to figure out what to look for and whether I'm getting a good deal or not. I've got some music store addresses and we may go try out fine instruments prior to checking out the used ones. I don't want to invest money in a poor instrument. This is so stressful!

We had an orchestra concert tonight. It was dumb. We had 2 practices a week set up for 2 1/2 weeks. The first week it was cold, then only 4 showed up, so no practice. The second week there were 5 and 6 of us and the director made us play. The last rehearsal we had a decent sized small orchestra. We played Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain" among other music. Fortunately only a few family members came, so we weren't embarrassed too much. While I like orchestra, I may boycott next summer.

I just realized this evening that I can't stand the terrible threes or whatever you want to call three year olds. I am sick and tired of messes all over everywhere. I don't mind only having one more kid. Then once I'm through- that is it. Will Karen ever be potty trained? She's back to wearing diapers since she is out of panties. She's using them too.

3 across in the tempo

I wanted to also shout the news of my latest car seat triumph. In the tempo I fit the graco turbobooster, rear-facing tribute, and graco cargo. The cargo has been sitting in my front room for months. I was tired of looking at it. I hoped there was some way to get all the car seats in the vehicles. Now they are all in. I'm going to let Karen forward face in the tempo when Benjamin is also in the car. If he's not, the she can ride in the tribute. Karen is maybe half and inch taller than Ben in the torso area. (That includes Ben's fluffy butt.) It is so cool that they can trade seats. They have been in the van. Now I put Karen's pink seat in the back where Ben's tribute was. I don't think they'll be trading seats in there any more. I put the titan on the middle, door side, so I have no reason to go to the back and put Ben into the pink seat.

cups and camp

We've had a problem with lack of cups lately. We have tons of those restaurant cups. I actually divided the stack in two and put half in storage. A while ago I was going many days between washing dishes, so I slowly got the spare stack out. Recently we have had few cups. One day I gathered up 8 cups from the bathroom and had the kids pick them up around the house (they aren't supposed to leave the kitchen), and around the yard. They picked up 8 cups outside and there are still a couple more. We then got a huge stack of restaurant cups, plus the pictures ones, 3 large colored, and 3 small colored. Now we are back to few. One of these days I'm going to assign cups and if they are gone the child is out of luck.

Benjamin prefers to shower himself with the sippy cup. It takes twenty minutes for him to sprinkle every last drop. I finally had enough. He is banned from sippy cups. I prefer him to dump it in one, half second dump. He's actually getting pretty good with a regular cup. The first two kids went to regular cups around the same age for a similar reason. Eric held on to his till 18 months and I think Karen was over two. Some days I wish she still used a sippy cup. That girl is miss accident.

Caitlyn went to Girl Scout camp last week. It was Wednesday to Friday. Each girl had to choose a job. Caitlyn chose "Trail Boss". Later she was awarded for keeping the counselors in line and knowing all the rules. She was acting herself! She left her camera, hat, and coat at camp. Hopefully they'll turn up in the lost and found. She had a great time. Yesterday she showed me how her loose tooth was sideways. I was very mean and pulled it out. She was hoping to keep it till her birthday. It has been very loose for months. Finally, Caitlyn has lost her first tooth. She'll be 7 in two months.

I love shopping for my new to me vehicle. I'm down to two options: Honda Pilot and Toyota Sienna. I'm not even pregnant. I just hate my van. I looked up safety ratings. If I get into a frontal offset collision in the aerostar the steering wheel is likely to pop off rendering the air bag useless. At least the dummy lived. I need them to test with a short dummy that doesn't fit the seat belt.

Getting caught up

Two weekends ago we went up to Logan to visit the in laws. They had Aaron buy them new computer stuff and he assembled the computers. This is the way to get a fancy computer for less money. He spent the weekend doing that. I took the kids out to a little zoo, the playground, and shopping. I got to see the Graco Nautilus car seat in person. I don't like it. I love the radian even more now. The Nautilus has massive armrests. That is fine for people who don't have full vehicles. We went to Big 5 where sil works and gets an extended family discount. I bought Caitlyn some $40 hiking boots for $13.50. Grandma helped buy Eric a Cars tent set. He sleeps in the tent in his bedroom now.

Wednesday was Emily's first dance class. She loved it. I think she'll do dance this fall. I've got a new piano student to pay for dance. She starts Thursday. Saturday was a busy day. We went to the Pioneer Celebration and did a bunch of crafts. I made the kids do the DUP scavenger hunt to get free tickets to the rodeo. Next we went to the train museum. They went on the motorized train three times and played on the big engine while waiting. Why do parks need playgrounds? Just park and old train engine. In the evening I took the kids who desired to the rodeo. That was Karen and Caitlyn. Karen was very wiggly and it is hard to tell whether she really enjoyed it or not, but Caitlyn certainly did despite freezing. She is planning to participate in "Muttin Bustin'" next rodeo. (She wants to ride a sheep.) Eric wants to go to the next rodeo. Today a homeschooler started summer science classes. I dropped the big girls off even though they complained and said they didn't like science. Later their story changed. They love science. Caitlyn goes to girl scout camp tomorrow. I hope my trip out and back is a safe one. I hate driving to unfamiliar places, especially when they ar far away. It should take me and hour and a half to get to the camp. Ben's staph infection is back. I feel like a bad housekeeper and mom. I'll take him back to the doctor tomorrow morning if possible. Orchestra rehearsal started tonight. Or at least it was supposed to. It was freezing and windy, so music was passed out and we went home.

Oh, the car seat news is that the scenera car seat has these pokey things on the bottom where the harness can catch. I checked Karen's seat and found a snag. That compromises the integrity of the harness, so I called Dorel. They are sending me a new harness. In the meantime I am thankful we have a spare carseat and that Karen is under 30 pounds.

Another Dance show

The video I took at the dance recital was sideways. I didn't realize you shouldn't take sideways videos and I couldn't figure out any way to fix it. The quality wasn't particularly good anyway. There were some heads in the way. Yesterday afternoon Caitlyn's dance teacher called and asked if Caitlyn would dance at the library today. I got a front row seat. Caitlyn didn't dance quite as well and I completely forgot about makeup. I decided to make her hair curly with braided wet hair since my two previous attempts at using the curling iron resulted in sticky (from all the hairspray), straight hair.

She only did her ballet at the library. Here is a low quality picture of her tap dance.

I am wracking my brain over whether Caitlyn will take dance next year or not. The teacher needs to know whether to save her a spot or not. I don't know!!!

Saving money and such

We had a check cleared in our bank account with a number too high to be hours. I finally called the bank yesterday. They investigated and found it to be an error and refunded us our $30.

Caitlyn is signed up for Girl Scout camp! I hope she likes it. I think she will, but will be nervous at first.

Ben's infection has not cleared up after 10 days of medication. Now he's got a new one to take for 7 days. He loves medicine.

Setting Apart

Tonight we all went to the Tabernacle for Aaron to be set apart as a ringer for the Tabernacle Choir. We got to go in the back in the president's room. That's the one all the prophets and councilors back to Brighaim Young have sat, discussed, and prayed in. It was an awesome experience to be in the room during the blessing. The kids were all well behaved too!

I had planned to stay afterwards and enjoy temple square, but forgot the diaper bag. I managed to find the way home going a different route than I am used to.

Exhilarating feeling of flying

I went out to water my "garden" tonight. My giant pumpkin is dead. I will continue watering for two weeks to see if the seeds come up. After that I will give up on the garden this year. I had considered buying tomato and pepper plants which have prospered in my garden before, but the neighbor dog continues to get into my yard and trample around in my garden. (The garden is against the fence.) Instead I will keep a tarpe on parts of the garden to kill the weeds so I can start earlier next year. After making that decision I got on the swing. The movement and the cool breeze were just right to make me feel happy instead of disappointed. I have been grateful for that swing numerous times.

Today was an outing day. We went to Wheeler historic farm for the annual School for the blind day. It was fun to see all the animals. Ben's favorites were the ducks and geese. Then this afternoon I took the girls to see Prince Caspian. It was too scary for Karen and she was a pain for a good part of the movie. Fortunately, we sat next to some ward members with a refillable popcorn bucket. When they had had their fill they handed us the rest. The popcorn kept Karen occupied for quite a while. After the movie we went to KFC- through the drive-thru. When we got home we had a picnic on our lawn. Karen slept. Benjamin just wanted to chase the cat who wanted to eat our chicken. The big girls didn't eat much. I should have gone for a less expensive option.

I asked the girls what was the most fun today. Emily said getting wet by the sprinklers while riding by on her scooter. Caitlyn said being hot at the farm. Apparently we don't have to do much for kids to have fun.

Dance recital

This evening was Caitlyn's dance recital. Caitlyn told me she was front and center because she was so good and all the other girls had to look at her. I didn't believe her. I do now. She's really good! She knew all her dance steps and got them right on time. She didn't even look at her feet. Now I feel a little bad about discontinuing dance classes. The other kids want in on activities and swimming is quite a bit less expensive. The kids really need to learn to swim for safety's sake anyway. I've sold Caitlyn real well on being on the swim team. She can't wait to take first place in races. It'll be a year before she can be on the team. The requirement is that the kids need to be able to swim the length of the pool. I bet by next year Caitlyn will be able to. Although Caitlyn likes dancing, it isn't what she loves to do. She loves to play the piano and recorder. She practices several times daily all on her own. She even sets her own goals. Caitlyn is just one of those talented and very determined personalities so that anything she wanted to do she could do well. I so wish I was her. I've got some video and pictures from the recital, but not on the computer tonight.

Swimming Adventures

Last month Karen took swimming lessons. She loved them and did well. This month the other three are in lessons. The lessons are during the day. Two classes with 3 kids in each. They love swimming lessons too. Yesterday the slide was turned on. Emily and Caitlyn both managed to be tall enough to ride the slide alone. They loved it! Karen is a pain. I tried about 5 times to get Karen into swim lessons this session, but I couldn't. We usually go out to the lobby and I watch through the glass while Karen and Ben walk around. Then we go back into the pool area near the end of lessons. Karen likes to test the limits. I have told them to her. She will then go an inch over which I say "no" to. Then she'll go even more. Yesterday she went to the pole at the stairs and started swinging on it. I told her to get off and come back. She fell into the pool. I made her take a shower, then she had to wear clean panties (I keep a couple spares.) and a towel out to the van. There I found her a sweatshirt and some 3xl shorts. She screamed and cried all the way home. I hope she's learned her lesson.

Trying to find balance

I read The Other Side of Heaven by Elder Groeburg. It was an awesome read. I came out of it wanting to renounce all my worldly goods and move to Tonga. Then it was Monday. I am trying to figure out what to get rid of and what to keep. I read the kids a book about Confucious. The Duke of Lu quit listening to Confucious when he got too wrapped up in entertainment. Some entertainment is okay. Where do we draw the line? A while ago I found Star Trek TOS cassettes at the library. Aaron and I watch three episodes a week. Recently I allowed the kids to watch and they are hooked! Last night we watched late, so the kids didn't get to see. It was the episode with Khan. Chekov isn't in the series yet. In the movie Chekov knows who Khan is and Khan "never forgets a face". I guess Chekov was a security guard that Khan knocked out... Aaron popped in The Wrath of Khan after we watched the episode. Seedlings I think. Enterprise sure got an overhaul! The graphics were great too. I was sad when Spock died. I'm glad I know he comes back to life.

The other news is gardening. I tested my soil. The ph is too high and there is no nitrate. Walmart doesn't sell nitrate anymore because it can be made into a narcotic, so I got some plant food with nitrate. I hope that will work. I've decided to do a small garden again. My garden plot is out of shape and I should have planted last week.

Saturday, May 3, 2008

Gardening

Thursday was the day to plant seeds in the garden. Officially anyway. I still have to go out and remove the weeds, then arrange for the ward tiller owner to come till my garden plot. Out of my indoor garden the only living thriving plant left is a giant pumpkin. I've got a bunch of seeds and will buy tomato and pepper plants. I like fresh peppers and tomatoes.

The kids have discovered how fun showers are. They don't know how to properly used a shower curtain, however. We've been going through a lot of towels. Today is laundry day. I won't finish. I was going to hang a load or two outside in order to get more in the wash, but now it is cloudy and a bit chilly.

Ben can climb on chairs. Isn't that exciting? That means I have to clean my kitchen counter and keep the table clear. Lately he has been waking up at 4:30am and screaming for hours. Then he gets tired early.

Fun

Emily and I went to Aaron's bell rehearsal last night. It was a dress rehearsal, so almost like the performance. It was really good. It is interesting what all you can do with bells. They didn't just ring them! They had guest artists playing pianos, flute, trumpet, and double bass. Emily was awed by the giant violin. She had wanted to be babysat instead, but I made her come. In the end she said she was glad she came. Grandma, Grandpa, and Aunt Cathy came too and that was fun. We also got to see beautiful flowers and the visitor centers at Temple Square. The other kids had fun and survived being babysat.

Latest Tragedies

Saturday Karen sliced her hand on a piece of glass and spent half the day at the ER with her father. They glued it up. Then she fell Sunday morning walking out the door. There was no glue left by Monday. I hope it is okay.

I got to attempt to do up Caitlyn for her dance pictures. I am very insufficient as a beauty person. I attempted makeup and did okay with that. Just got mascara spots on her. I utterly failed at making curls. The dance teacher said she had something for the recital.

Sunday I woke up with mastitis. That was really fun- Not. It was like having the flu with a giant bruise. I went to the doctor on Monday and got on meds. I'm feeling fine today and just have a little "bruise".

I think Ben gave me his infection. He has a sinus infection, so he oozes nasty, yucky boogars all day.

I think I've decided the turboboosters are fine for the kids until outgrown. Perhaps by that time something fantastic will be out. That means I don't have to save money for more car seats. Yet.

Instead I'm considering letting Emily take orchestra next year. She'd need a 1/4 violin. Those aren't too pricey, so I could save up for that. Or I could get my own instruments fixed. (What an idea!)

School Seating

Why don't they make seats like these for schools? They are comfy, different colors, and, best of all- you can harness the kids so they don't get out and bug other students!
Photobucket

Karen got to be harnessed in her pink seat after the picture. I picked up the twin seats from a freecycler. I got all applicable info to know the seats are safe for use. They aren't the best. They are the more delux model of the Tribute that Ben has been in. Since the new titan fit in the van, I put the very slim tribute into dh's car. I'm attempting to sell the other titan. Otherwise it would make a decent spare in case Karen pees in her seat again. The pink cover has to hang dry. The titan covers can go in the dryer. I have gone through potty training of 3 kids and not one of them has ever had an accident in the car. Karen is the fourth and just has to be the difficult one. Monday evening she peed all over her car seat, the seat underneath, and the seat belt. Just lovely.

Life stuff

I thought I'd take a break from my car safety issues to tell what all is up around here. Grandma signed the kids up for swimming lessons. This month is Karen's turn. She has no fear, loves the water, and is doing really well. The other three kids are impatient about their turn. They put on their goggles in the house and jump of chair "diving boards". Emily is tall enough to go down the slide by herself this year. Caitlyn has a little over an inch to grow. The kids are talking about doing swimming next school year as their activity. I realized it was a lot cheaper than any other activity, so presented it as an option. Caitlyn wants to be on the swim team. She is a very competitive child and would really enjoy racing.

Ben had his 1 year check up a few weeks ago. (He was nearly 14 months old.) He has made it to 20 pounds, 10 oz! I could forward face him in our nearly expired Graco Tresured CarGo seat. I'm not going to forward face him till he has outgrown the rear-facing seat. There was an article in the recent issue of Pediatrics on why babies should be rear-facing to at least age 2. I asked the ped for a copy and it is in the mail. What I've seen of the article is really good. Eric went in for his 5 year checkup. He is 43 pounds. The doctor said he's doing awesome. I knew that. Yesterday the kids went to the dentist and once again the kids' teeth look great! I am impressed that in 8 years Emily has not had one cavity. I guess either the kids inherited great teeth or we're doing something right.

I've started my indoor garden. I've got onions, oregano, parsley, tomatoes, and pumpkins just coming up. Hopefully I'll do things right this year and get these plants to grow outdoors. I wish I had a rototiller. My elderly gardener friend moved. I need to find another gardener buddy.

Child Passenger Safety

Riding in an automobile is the most dangerous thing our children do and they do it nearly every day. We never know when an accident will occur. 80 percent of automobile accidents happen within 20 minutes from home.[i] Therefore it is imperative that our children ride safely each and every time they are in an automobile.

The first step is to select an appropriate child safety seat. Infants under the age of one year AND weight of 20 pounds must ride rear-facing.[ii] The baby weighing twenty-five pounds at nine months of age must ride rear-facing as does the eighteen pound eighteen month old. Recent research has led the American Academy of Pediatrics to recommend rear-facing to the limit of the seat.[iii] The least expensive rear-facing seat (Cosco Scenera) rear-faces to 35 pounds.[iv] The average child will reach that limit around age three.[v] A rear-facing seat is outgrown in height when the child’s head is one inch from the top of the car seat shell.

Once the child has reached the limit for rear-facing, they must sit in a forward-facing harnessed seat. The majority of forward-facing seats harness to 40 pounds. maximum harness heights vary from 14 inches to 17 inches. A forward-facing seat is outgrown when over the weight limit, the shoulders go above the top useable harness slot, or the ears are above the shell of the seat. The bare minimum to sit in a belt-positioning booster is age 4 AND weighing 40 pounds. Often children this young are not mature enough to sit in a seat belt or he/she may fall over when asleep in the car. Most child safety experts agree that children should be 6 years old before moving to a belt positioning booster due to bone development.[vi] In order to reach this goal, many children should be in a harnessed seat that has a higher weight limit of 50 lbs. or more.[vii]

When it is time for a booster seat, one with a high back should be selected. The head rest should provide side impact protection. Look for a seat with open belt guides so the belt can move freely and not allow slack in front of the child. The back portion of the seat is outgrown once the child’s shoulders are above the highest belt setting. Then it is time to use a backless (low back) booster. When the child can pass the Five Step Test[viii], they may ride with a lap-shoulder belt alone. Remember that every step up in child restraints is a step down in safety.

Eighty percent of child safety seats are installed and used incorrectly.[ix] Be sure to read both the car seat manual and the portion of your vehicle's manual pertaining to installation of car seats. When installed, the seat should not move more than 1 inch at the belt path. The harness should be snug with no twists in the straps. Bulky clothing should not be worn.[x] The chest clip needs to be positioned at armpit level. Do not use an expired car seat. Most expire 6 years after the date of manufacture.[xi] (Found imprinted in the seat’s plastic.) Finally, it is recommended that a Child Passenger Safety Technician review your work. Call 843-2338 to make an appointment with Tooele’s CPST.

Children are our most precious cargo. They look to adults for protection. Let us make wise decisions to keep them safe.

Obsessed

I have been obsessed with the thought of rear-facing Karen in the car. I recently watched the crash videos which made me want to rear-face her even more. I found out that the $44 Cosco scerena is only 16 inches wide. I went to walmart tonight with my measuring tape just to make sure. I picked up the pink, flowery scenera and bought it with my music cash. It rear-faces to 35 pounds. Karen weighs 26. I haven't mentioned this to Aaron yet. He will think I'm off my rocker. Especially since I haven't told him.

I cleaned the house a bit more today. Tomorrow we'll really go at it. Except I told the kids we'd learn about the parts of a flower tomorrow. I suppose we can take a cleaning break to learn something. Caitlyn wants to make dandelion cookies too. They are healthy and full of vitamins. Maybe we will.

Another car seat success!

Today I took the van in for service and took the courtesy shuttle home. The driver was more than happy to wait for me to install seats for the kids to ride safely. Once home I installed three harnessed seats in the Tempo. I had to take the younger three since dh was working at home and not tending babies. I found the harness for the Graco Treasured Cargo seat as it is thinner than the cosco high back booster that Karen usually rides in. I like the graco seat except for the harness adjuster being in the back. If it weren't for that I'd switch Karen's seat. The Treasured Cargo expires this December anyway. Here' my pictures:

In other news, Emily is having issues. It may be the weather. She always has problems when the weather changes. She doesn't seem to understand why she can't play all day- especially outside all day with her hair all messy. This afternoon she started crying about how she didn't like that it wasn't spring anymore. She cried the day she put on shorts and there was snow outside. She cries just about anything. Eric is allergied. He was sent to bed when I was out, so I doubt that he got his allergy medicine. Karen is starting to have allergy issues too. She's going through a phase that I don't like. She seems to be deaf, but I know she can hear. Caitlyn sure is a good kid. She's the only one with no issues going on. She's just going blind. I took her in to the eye doctor this morning. Her vision with her current prescription is 20/70. I shelled out the money for new glasses. I hope no one else needs them any time soon. Between glasses and the cars we are spending a big chunk of our tax return.

Back to history

I read some of Caitlyn's American Girl books. They were the ones on the Depression girl. I found it very interesting, so I picked up an adult book on the Depression. I'm learning quite a bit. It got me back into reading which is good. I realized that my grandfather was 5 years old when the stock market crashed. I wonder if he remembers anything. My grandma (on my dad's side) was 10 years old. I've got to talk to her.

I'm trying to get back into cooking and cleaning. I made a menu for the week and spent an hour cooking and chopping today. I wish cooking was simpler...I washed all the dishes too and cleaned the living room. I've got to get to everything else.

The kids begged their father to play Nintendo because they wanted to watch. Karen fell asleep on the couch. I think the rest of the kids will be sleeping downstairs too.

We had snow last night. The cat's bowls were iced this morning, so I set out yet another for food. It all melted already. Aaron reported unsafe driving conditions this morning. I'm glad I wasn't in the car with him. It sounded scary.

Eric is having trouble with allergies again. Zyrtec did nothing, so tonight I gave him Allegra. It worked last year. I am hoping it will work again. He's pretty miserable.

Three across

Mom is visiting. We went to meet her internet friend today. Mom had to drive her rental, so I thought we could save money by putting two kids in her car and three in Aaron's. I measured and did it. I think it is really cool. I love the radian!!! Before I put the seats back tonight I played around with them in the van.

The seats we keep in the car as the spare boosters. Emily's old turbobooster and her old Graco Treasured Cargo. (That seat is just aweful in harnessed mode since the adjusters are in back. You have to uninstall the seat to adjust the harness.)

The Cosco seat is a bit wide for us. It ended up in the middle row due to more space. I changed things around for every day. This is what I ended up with.
